On-Site Crankshaft Journal Repair

On-Site & In-Situ Crankshaft Journal Repair

The main journal forms the rotational centre of a crankshaft. Grinding or machining and polishing of crankshaft main journals is one of our specialities.

We guarantee our repairs to OEM (original equipment manufacturer) tolerances and surface finish specifications.

The only limit to the diameter catered for is the physical space available within the engine to mount our equipment.

For this sort of work, the crankshaft has to be rotated. We usually achieve this with the engine barring gear.

Due to restricted access on smaller engines, this sort of work tends to be performed on main engines. Typically B&W, MAN, Mirrlees, Pielstick, Sulzer, and Wartsila.

We Can Repair Your Crankshaft Journal On-Site

From our base in the UK, our highly trained engineers travel worldwide, making precision on-site repairs to large diesel engine crankshafts and crankpins. With our patented, portable equipment, our technicians come to you to get your engine up and running fast.

We are the UK’s foremost crankshaft repair experts with 70 years of in-situ experience.

We Are The Original On-Site Repair Company

Originally founded in 1952, Nicol & Andrew was the first company of its kind in the world to carry out in-situ machining and repairs on marine propulsion units.

We invented the tools to do the job on-site. Our orbital tooling system revolutionised the repair of crankshafts whilst still fitted in the engine. The system rotates around the damaged crankpin, so there is no need to remove or rotate the crankshaft.

A huge benefit is the reduction of downtime suffered by clients with crankshaft (crankpin and main journal) failures. A repair can be completed in just two or three days in many cases.

Machining to OEM Tolerances

Our in-house trained crankshaft technicians can carry out in-situ machining and polishing of crankshaft crankpins and journals to OEM tolerances and surface finish specifications.

Nicol & Andrew have performed this type of in-situ machining repair many hundreds of times over the years and so can guarantee total customer satisfaction.

What if I have a severely damaged crankpin, including the radius?

Our orbital system uses the radii as a datum. So you might think it is a problem if the bearing has swaged out under heat and damaged the radius.

In most cases, this is not a problem, with our proven ability to re-machine most damaged radii in alignment with the original shaft centreline.
